Module 2: Your Organization Blueprint

Introduction

The Box Theory™ Way begins with a ten-step exercise to create a business or Organization Blueprint.

  1. Mission Statement
  2. Value Statement
  3. Vision Statement
  4. Voice of the Customer
  5. Voice of the Employee
  6. S.W.O.T. Analysis
  7. Strategy
  8. Balanced Scorecard
  9. Organization Chart
  10. System Framework

Before you begin working on your business systems, you must have a clear understanding of who you are, where you are going, and how you are going to get there. Your Organization Blueprint serves that purpose; it will enable you to align your business systems with your business strategy and objectives.

By completing the ten foundational steps of the Organization Blueprint (video overview), you will better understand what your stakeholders want from the business, who your customers are and what they expect from you, and what is important to retain your key employees. You will come to understand your business strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and the threats your organization may face. From this knowledge, you will formulate your unique business strategy and set measurable goals.

Finally, you will create an organization chart and identify your key business activities—the systems and processes that make your business unique. At the end of these foundational steps, your priorities will be set; you will be ready to tackle your first system.

The table below is a brief description of the Organization Blueprint. In the following lessons of this course, you will thoroughly cover each topic. You may want to invite your key employees to help you develop this important document.

Organization Blueprint

STEP EXERCISE PURPOSE
1 Mission Statement Why do you exist?
2 Values Statement What are your core values?
3 Vision Statement Where do you want to be in five years, and beyond?
4 Voice of the Customer What do your customers expect from you?
5 Voice of the Employee What must you do to retain your best employees?
6 SWOT Analysis What are your organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats?
7 Strategy What is your unique game plan for success?
8 Balanced Scorecard What are your specific measurable goals?
9 Organizational Structure What business activities are you engaged in?
10 System Framework At what systems and processes must you excel?

When developing your business systems and processes, you will frequently refer back to your Organization Blueprint, in the same way a builder refers to an architectural plan. Once you have completed the Blueprint, you can update it at any time. I recommend you do it at least annually.
